Skype, a service that allows you to make voice and video calls over the internet, have just released their much anticipated app for the Android platform.

The app is now available to all devices that run Android 2.1 or above, and is available for free download from the Android Market. The app allows you to make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and free one-to-one or group instant messaging. It also allows calls to phones at reduced rates, all over a WiFi or 3G connection.

Here’s a short video (1:04) by Product Manager Mark Douglas explaining how the app works:

Skype for iOS was launched in May 2010 and is one of the most popular apps on the iOS platform. We expect Skype for Android to have similar success.
