Infographic: The history of photography from the Daguerreotype to Instagram

The guys over at Made with Over have released this rather splendid infographic documenting the near 200 year history of the humble photograph. The infographic was released to mark the launch of Over’s lite version, Overgam

The graphic shows how the world’s first truly usable permanent photographic technique, the Daguerreotype, took over eight hours to expose while these days we can take and share photos in a matter of seconds.

The infographic reports that since that first photograph over 3.5 trillion photos have been taken.  These days 70% of all Facebook activity (uploading, comments, likes, etc) is based on photos, which is a lot considering that 300 million photos are uploaded to the site every day.

Overgram was released this week and is the free/lite version of Over, the app that allows iOS users to place text and captions on photos taken on iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices. Since launching in July Over (@madewithOver | Facebook) has collected a loyal following of fans – not to mention thousands of downloads.

The Overgram app comes with 10 fonts. Over 255 are installed on the full version of the app, which retails for $0.99.  The app’s developers are giving away access to the app’s full version every day to one lucky user who tweets their Overgram’d photos with the hashtag “#BestOvergram.”
