Four Irish students among regional finalists of Google Science Fair

Google has today announced 90 regional finalists of its second Google Science Fair and, for the first time, two Irish entries have been shortlisted.

Ralph Moran has been shortlisted in the EMEA 13-14 year old category for his project that explores the effects that burning paraffin wax candles can have on the surrounding air. An all girl team in the EMEA 17-18 year old category has also been shortlisted, comprising of Muireasa Carroll, Denise Hurley and Mairead Kingston who created a renewable energy source from seaweed lettuce.

Google Science Fair is the world’s largest online science competition open to students aged between 13 and 18 and aims to champion young scientific talent, “giving students around the world the opportunity to participate and showcase their ideas”.

Each regional finalist will receive a Chromebook for their efforts so far. On June 6, 15 finalists will be selected and flown to Google’s Mountain View headquarters in California for a final judging event. The rest of the competition prizes sound amazing.
