PlayStation introduces PlayStation Rewards – A new way to gain exclusive status and recognition

PlayStation Rewards

Today PlayStation launched their newest venture PlayStation Rewards, a new program that recognises and rewards users for simply doing what they love – playing games and interacting with any content that PlayStation has to offer. That includes purchasing games in the PlayStation Store, add-ons from PlayStation Home, downloading movies and game trailers, or simply communicating with PlayStation by taking one of their surveys. All these activities will now be recognised and rewarded. Best of all, PlayStation Rewards is going to be free.

The program will be officially launched today and will be an invitation-only beta to all eligible PlayStation Plus and Gamer Advisory Panel (GAP) members. PlayStation have said:

“We’re kicking things off as a beta so that we can get feedback from our most loyal fans in order to make it the best possible rewards program it can be.”

They have also noted that during beta stage the program will be focused mainly on PlayStation 3 owners, but they hope to include PSP owners in the near future.

The program has three reward tiers – Select, Pro, and Legendary. The more you play and participate, the more you’ll progress through each tier. As your status increases, so do the rewards. And if you want to check out your current status level, simply go to your private profile page and look at your reward progress meter.

Right now the rewards include things like exclusive PSN avatars that display member status in the program, exclusive dynamic themes, PlayStation Home content, and members-only sweepstakes and give-aways for experiences and merchandise you won’t find anywhere else.

This new loyalty program is a welcomed addition to PlayStation platform and should encourage a lot more interaction and usage. It also shows that not everything from PlayStation is going down the paid road, directly. Rewards could entice people to purchase more items on the PlayStation Store, or in PlayStation Home. In this way, PlayStation Rewards is a smart move by Sony.

  • Wow, even gaming companies are now into customer rewards. I suppose the term "gamification" is now a true pun. Gamification of loyalty is certainly interesting from a profiling/academic point of view. I do agree there's a need for businesses to differentiate themselves, particularly when it comes to loyalty. One interesting tech that I've come across is http://mazecard.com.au, where multiple merchants participate in one consolidated program, which is accessible to all customer via a single account.
