76% of British Facebook users’ photos depict alcohol consumption

Cycle through photos of yourself on Facebook and chances are one common theme quickly emerges – the presence of alcohol. According to Mashable, quoting a MyMemory.com survey, a massive 76% of Britons are intoxicated in tagged Facebook photos of themselves.

The survey, which was conducted among 1,781 British Facebook users, found that 76% of respondents were depicted consuming or were after consuming alcohol in photos uploaded to the service.

These figures come as no surprise. The majority of photos on Facebook are of social events and occasions, and pubs and clubs are part and parcel of British (and Irish) social culture.

With a high-level of potentially embarrassing photos of oneself on Facebook (especially the ones uploaded by friends), privacy becomes increasingly important. According to the survey, 12% of Britons share photos of themselves with no one, 58% with just friends and worryingly 26% of users’ photos are available to the wider public.

Some 93% of respondents said they have untagged photos of themselves to save embarrassment – untagged photos aren’t private but are substantially less-likely to re-surface and haunt you at a later date.

With Christmas just around the corner, now is a good-time to check those Facebook privacy settings in preparation for embarrassing drunk Christmas party and family photos.
