Google announces plans for a €75 million energy-efficient data centre in Ireland

Google Ireland has announced plans to construct a highly energy-efficient data centre on a newly acquired 11-acre site near Clondalkin, Dublin. The €75 million investment will create 30 full-time jobs, with a further 200 required during construction.

Ireland’s cool climate was a major factor when choosing the centre’s location. By bringing in air from outside instead of relying solely on air-conditioning units to prevent servers from over-heating, this facility will rank as one of the “most energy-efficient data centres in the world”.

Construction on the data centre will begin “soon” and will take between 12 to 15 months to complete. When complete, this data centre will be Google’s ninth in total and will compliment their existing rented data centre facility in Dublin also.

The centre will employ 30 full time staff, including computer technicians, electrical and mechanical engineers, as well as catering and security staff.

Google already employs over 2,000 in its city centre campus on Dublin’s Barrow Street, with this morning’s announcement further emphasising the company’s commitment to Ireland.

Earlier this week Twitter and Electronic Art’s BioWare both announced that they would be setting up new offices in Dublin and Galway respectively.
