As with most things Nintendo these days the company doesn’t just see the device as a games machine but as a family entertainment machine, “In the way Wii brought families together, Nintendo 3DS will appeal to a broad range of people” said Laurent Fischer, Nintendo of Europe’s Managing Director of Marketing & PR.

The console uses a autostereoscopic LCD display screen to produce a three dimensional environment for players, the result is a three dimensional effect that recedes into the screen rather that a Avatar-like one that extrudes.

The announcement comes weeks after Nintendo recommended that the device should not be used by children under the age of six for long periods of time.  The company warned that prolonged use of 3D devices, including the 3DS could “have a negative impact on the growth of their eyes.

Nintendo’s announcement comes a week ahead of Sony’s rumoured release of a significant amount of information about the PSP2.
