Netflix on PS3
Sony’s PlayStation 3 is the number one device for streaming Netflix on a television, the movie streaming service revealed today.
With 30 million subscribers across 40 countries worldwide, Netflix is the leading internet television network, recording more than one billion viewing hours each month.
Sony’s six-year-old console, the PlayStation 3, is the single most popular device for streaming Netflix on a television. This year, on occasion, the PS3 even surpassed all other devices, including laptops and tablets, in terms of Netflix viewing hours.
Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings commented,
“PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our No. 1 platform overall.”
Netflix describes the PS3 as a “primary development platform”, recognising both communities’ “strong passion for high quality entertainment”.
Hastings continued,
“PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing and first deploying our most advanced features. We can transparently update our application with new features on a daily basis, and through the free PlayStation Network, people around the world can sign up for Netflix directly from their PS3.”
To date, the PS3 has sold over 70 million devices worldwide, having recently released a new “smaller and lighter” console, while doing its best to quell rumours of a sixth generation PS4 console before the end of next year.
Netflix intends to continue joint development of its app with Sony on the PS3, the only platform where Netflix’s voice-controlled user interface “Max” is currently being tested.
Netflix is also available on the PS Vita in the United States.
