Irish mobile services company Phonovation has expanded its mobile payments service to include the purchase of Xbox LIVE Gold membership and Microsoft Points. Microsoft Points are the universal coin with which users can purchase games, movies and TV shows on their Xbox.
As near field communication (NFC) and wireless payment technology is introduced to more and more smartphones, analysts predict that the value of NFC transactions alone by 2014 will approach $50 billion, and will begin to slowly replace the humble credit card.
Microsoft are rumoured to have plans to introduce near-field communication, or NFC, technology into future versions of their Windows Mobile operating system. According to sources familiar to the plan, the first Windows Mobile devices with NFC enabled may be released later this year.
