Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman Kaz Hirai
Sony will not be announcing the PlayStation 4 at this year’s E3 gaming expo. Microsoft and Nintendo, however, are still expected to press ahead with their own forthcoming console announcements.
Sony will not be announcing their next-generation console this June in Los Angeles, where it was previously speculated that they would make a surprise appearance.
Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman Kaz Hirai said in a brief statement at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the company would “not be making any announcements at E3”, and that it had no plans to flout the PS3’s stated 10-year life cycle.
Taking that literally, it’s possible that we won’t see the PS4 until late 2016.
It seems slightly odd that Sony are insisting on adhering so rigidly to their original 10-year life cycle strategy, especially since Microsoft will likely gain another crucial console head-start on Sony. Some of the PS3’s technology, like Blu-ray, is already proving obsolete.
