Google has today announced that its video service YouTube is adding 3,000 new movie titles available to rent and view on-demand to users in the United States. YouTube has partnered with Universal, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros to begin offering thousands of full-length feature films, bringing the total number of movies available to stream on the video platform to around 6,000.

YouTube is celebrating 50 years of manned space flight by premiering a feature length film which recreates Yury Gagarin’s first orbit in outer space. Wysips a young company from Provence have created a paper-thin photovoltaic film which can generate an electrical charge from any light source. The company claims that the transparent film can be fitted over a smartphone or tablet’s screen without affecting the sensitivity of the touch or dimming the screen’s brightness.

Google has acquired Irish digital video technology company Green Parrot Pictures with the intention of using their innovations to improve the quality of videos uploaded to YouTube. A have-a-go hero granny, Ann Timson, helped foil a gang of bank robbers as they attempted to break into a Northamton Jewellery store in broad daylight yesterday. In the video the Ms Timson can be seen running across a busy road towards the thieves as they busily attempt to smash the glass on the Michael Jones Jewellers store front. As she approaches the thieves Timson, who is in her 70s, swings her hand bag at the robbers, eventually dispersing them.
